I purchased the stainless steel version of the ISI charger when my old black aluminum bottle bit the dust. After only two years of constant use my original bottle failed to take a charge anymore. I went through about $10's worth of CO2 charges before I broke down and bought this new one. The first decision I had to make was whether or not I should buy any new product for ISI. While I have not done the math, it seemed very unlikely that I could have saved enough money making my own soda in the relatively short time I had owned the black bottle, especially when you calculate the cost of all those failed attempts. Honestly though, I cannot be sure that user error did not contribute to the problem. These things take some getting used to. If you do not tighten the charge head onto the bottle with sufficient pressure, the charge will leak. If this happens, you are supposed to press the dispenser lever and let all the partially charges soda run down the drain until all pressure is off the bottle, then refill and try again. After about the third time that happened, I just could not stand the thought of wasting all that partially charged soda so I slapped a new canister in, cranked down the head, gave a twist and viola, sparkling extra fizzy soda. After that, whenever I had a leak, I rationalized my failure to heed the instructions by thinking, "Well, I am not really using a second charge, more like a charge and one half." This even though I knew the instruction said nothing about two charges; it says, "not more than one." So now I am forced to admit that by leaving the bottle in the refrigerator with more than a standard charge on it, I probably caused the spring to fail prematurely. And besides that, I really like having sparkling frigid soda always available all the time. I add it to orange juice with about a quarter teaspoon of simple syrup to make my own Orangina, I add it to equal amounts of pomegranate juice for a great breakfast beverage. I will add more of my favorite recipes to the comments. Once the decision to replace my old charger was made, I decided to upgrade, a decision I could not justify logically.Now as an owner of the stainless bottle, I still find it hard to justify the decision logically. Really???...can this new bottle be 33% better? However, in hindsight and given the opportunity, I would choose the stainless bottle again. Here's why. First, it's shorter. The aluminum one is too tall to fit conveniently anywhere but one special spot on the door of my refrigerator. The new bottle is at least an inch shorter and fits nicely in lots of spots. It is also thinner, and lighter. Does is chill faster? I have not tested this, but think it does. The cylinder that accepts the charge is nicer. On the aluminum one, the cylinder is made from plastic, on the stainless bottle it is machined from metal, apparently stainless with a polished steel collar and comfort vinyl coating above that. I like the heft and feel of this design much better. Next, on the head for the cheaper bottle, the soda is discharged from just has a straight tube. The stainless version features a four jet nozzle fitted into the end of the tube. This creates four powerful micro steams of soda, dramatically increasing the number of bubbles in the dispensed soda. Most importantly my old bottle has a plastic lining to keep the soda from reacting with the aluminum. Overnight this will definitely impart a mild but noticeable plastic taste to the soda. Once mixed with anything I could not really detect this effect, but right from the bottle it is definitely there and you know it is affecting the results in any recipe. Are these improvements worth roughly $23? If you are tight for cash and really want a soda charger right now, no, but if you can spare $0.014 per day over an estimated five year life span of the bottle, I can guarantee you will enjoy the stainless version at least that much more.

I bought this hoping to persuade my husband to make his own fizzy water using the RO water from our filter, rather than the unhealthy sodas he had been drinking.Not only does he LOVE making his own selzer, but he flavors it with the organic extracts I always have on hand, creating delicious HEALTHY flavors that are not available elsewhere. (We add the extracts to the glass, not the siphon.)We found that the water used must be very cold and you must shake at least 20 times after charging to get the best bubbles.I just ordered a case of ISI cartriges because it's become our beverage of choice.THANK YOU ISI for making a stainless siphon.

Contrary to experiences of some other users here, I inserted one of my new Leland co2 cartridges into the isi stainless steel siphon, and it worked perfectly. No gas leakage. Before this, I had filled the siphon with water, put in refrigerator for a few hours, then started the co2 release. Afterwards, following suggestions of other reviewers, gave it 20-30 shakes to better dissolve the co2 in the water. Filled a glass with definitely well carbonated water, probably even more charged, than some store bought bottled soda water. No strange after taste noted, either.Shims not required for Leland cartridge. I think some folks did not sufficiently tighten the charger unit before initiating the final twist, so the seal was not properly made, and gas escaped. Turn the holder with the charger until some resistance is felt, which is when the pointed unit in the siphon head is up against the metal seal of the cartridge, then get proper grip on the siphon and charger to allow about a 180 degree twist, executed rapidly to assure an internal seal, otherwise some gas will leak. The addition of a shim should not be necessary, but may ease the process for some folks. Also, there are several models of isi siphons, so other models may have issues with non-isi cartridges. And thanks to other Amazon reviewers for their helpful suggestions with isi siphons.
